WEEKLY WORKOUT: Sonya and Erin learn some exercises to help them avoid holiday weight gain

Personal trainer, Angie Gallagher puts us through the paces on a regular basis. Now, she has exciting news about holiday weight gain.

“The good news is the weight gain isn’t as much as previously thought,” says Angie. It’s not five to ten pounds. It’s more like one to two pounds for the average person.”

That’s not much and it can’t be that hard to lose, right?

“The bad news is,” says Angie. “It’s a lifetime gain. Most people never take those one to two pounds off. So when it starts in your late teens or in college it may not seem like much, but by the time you’re middle aged, you’re overweight.”

The key is not gaining those one to two pounds in the first place. Believe it or not, the holidays are a great time to start a new exercise routine.

Angie offers an eight week course during the holidays and other times throughout the year. “It’s a good place to be responsible and people are expecting you to be there,” says Angie.

If you’re already working out, Angie says it’s time to change things up.

“If you’re already in a program you want to increase the amount of time per day you’re working out, increase the number of days a week, or increase the intensity of your routine.”

Angie also has three tips that will help you now and all year long. First, invest in a heart rate monitor so you know how hard you’re working, or how much you’re slacking. Second, schedule your workouts just like any other appointment during your day. Also, try working out in the morning. Finally, eat smart. Keep a food diary, take in tons of fruits and vegetables and try to eat something healthy before you hit those holiday parties.

Follow these tips and keep up the workout and Angie says you won’t have to worry about losing weight in January.

“It’s really important to maintain your weight instead of gaining those one to two pounds every year.”
