LIVEWELL MINUTE: Sleeve Gastrectomy
Weight loss surgeons at Iowa Health – Des Moines are using a new surgical weight-loss procedure called Sleeve gastrectomy. It is a great option for any patient considering weight loss surgery.
Dr. Teresa LaMasters, M.D., Bariatric Surgeon says, “Advantages of the Sleeve Gastrecotomy are rapid weight loss and lowering the presence or risk of weight related diseases. At the same time avoiding some of the long-term risks related to the other procedures, such as Lap Band and Gastric Bypass.”
In this procedure, a thin, vertical sleeve of stomach is created. Approximately three quarters of the stomach is removed. This non-reversible procedure is permanent and done laparoscopically, helping reduce recovery time for the patient.
Dr. LaMasters says, “Sleeve gastrectomy limits the amount of food patients can eat and helps patients feel full sooner. Patients can lose an average of 60 to 70 percent of excess body weight and can see significant improvements in their overall health.”
