LIVEWELL MINUTE: Immunizations

Posted on: 4:21 pm, February 2, 2012, by , updated on: 08:24pm, March 7, 2012

Before vaccines, parents in the United States could expect that every year:

  • Polio would paralyze 10,000 children;
  • Measles would infect about 4 million children, killing 3,000; and
  • Diphtheria would be one of the most common causes of death in school-aged children.

Lisa Menzies, MD Blank Children s Hospital says, “Childen have benefited more from vaccines than from any other preventive program in history. Vaccinations are safe and they save lives every day.”

Immunizations help the immune system recognize and quickly attack organisms that can cause disease. Some immunizations are only needed once while others can require several doses over a period of time.

Dr. Menzies says, ”It is very important for parents to make sure their children receive their immunizations on time as well as keep good records.”
