A measure to penalize Iowa employers who hire illegal workers is going to the House floor for consideration.

The bill mandates businesses use a federal employment-eligibility program to screen new hires. It also requires the Attorney General, county attorneys and local police to investigate complaints.

Businesses that hire undocumented workers would have to fire them, and could lose their licenses for ten days.

Opponents say the e-verification system is has glitches and often incorrectly classifies legal workers as undocumented.
