EDUCATION CHANGE: Another change has been made in Gov. Branstad’s plan to reform Iowa’s education system

Gov. Terry Branstad’s education reform plan has undergone another change.

Tuesday it was announced formal annual teacher evaluations would be replaced with a system that includes peer reviews.

The state mandates each veteran teacher be formally evaluated by a supervisor every three years. The new proposal would require informal reviews by another educator in all other years. The change in teacher reviews is the third major change to Gov. Branstad’s education reform plan.

The governor says he’s disappointed lawmakers are scaling back his reform.

The governor’s plan includes major changes to literacy, online education, teacher education, hiring, firing and student testing. Branstad says he’s happy the House and Senate are moving forward but still wants them to pass bold education reform.

You can have your say on the house bill. A public hearing is being held next Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the capitol.
