Around 6:00 a.m., heavy smoke was spotted pouring from Liberty Tire on East Euclid Avenue.
Firefighters say a large pile of shredded tires caught fire.
Even after putting it out the first time, firefighters’ job wasn’t done.
Brian O’Keefe with the Des Moines Fire Department said, “When we arrived the pile was burning, small flames. But even as you put water on it, it goes out then the heat builds back up and starts up.”
To permanently put out the fire, end-loaders were brought in to spread out the tire plan.
That helps reduce heat and prevents the fire from reigniting.
