Iowa Workforce Development says the unemployment rate for Iowa in January dropped.

The number of unemployed Iowans dropped by 3,000 from December 2011 to January 2012, bringing the state’s unemployment rate to 5.4 percent. That’s a drop of seven-tenths of a percent from January of 2011’s rate of 6.1 percent.

“The Iowa Economy is improving,” said IWD director Teresa Wahlert. “The state’s unemployment rate has been tracking downward rapidly since fourth quarter 2011, as the recovery picked up speed. Newly revised figures for 2011 show that the statewide unemployment rate averaged 5.9 percent in 2011, which was the sixth-lowest rate in the nation.”

The national unemployment rate for January was 8.3 percent.
