The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines is showcasing some new additions this weekend.

The first change zoo-goers will notice is a new entrance, located about one block north of the current entrance on Southwest 9th Street. Then patrons will get the chance to see the new Rocky Shores Seal and Sea lion pool.

“The seal and sea lion pool is a new centerpiece for Blank Park Zoo. The pool is a huge upgrade both for the animals and our visitors,” says CEP Mark Vukovich.

It includes an underwater viewing area and a new overlook into the pool. Two young harbor seals will also join the other animals in the exhibit, once they’ve been acclimated to their new surroundings.

A temporary exhibit about ice age mammals will also open this weekend. It features a woolly mammoth, saber tooth tigers, and an elephant-sized ground sloth called a megatherium.
