LIVEWELL MINUTE: Weight Loss Surgery and Diabetes
There is increasing evidence that weight loss surgery is a viable treatment for some diabetes patients.
Dr. Todd Eibes, Medical Director, UnityPoint Health Weight Loss Specialists says, “The primary risk factor for type 2 diabetes is obesity. 90 percent of all patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.”
Both the International Diabetes Federation and the American Diabetes Association recently recommended consideration of weight loss surgery for people with type 2 diabetes who have a body mass index of 35 or greater. In a recent article in the American Journal of Medicine, investigators analyzed more than 600 cases over a 16 year period. 78 percent of diabetic patients in the study who had the surgery resolved their diabetes, and an additional 10 percent improved their condition.
Dr. Eibes says, “While diet, exercise, and medication are still the first line of treatment for morbidly obese diabetic patients, surgery offers the only realistic hope of complete remission.”
