Police are investigating a former Girl Scout troop leader that allegedly stole money earned during cookie sales.

The current leader of the Des Moines troop reported the case. Hillary Welborn told police she became suspicious after going to the bank to check on the group’s finances. She noticed suspicious purchases and discrepancies in the amounts deposited.

In all, Welborn told police about $8,000 of the cookie sales money is missing.

The name of the former leader is not available because as of Thursday, no charges had been filed in the case.

A spokesperson for the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa says they’re taking the allegation seriously but cannot comment while the investigation is underway.
