Hundreds of volunteers spent the day lending a hand to help some metro homeowners spruce up.

The 17th annual Rebuilding Together Day was held to help low-income homeowners who physically or financially can’t renovate their homes.

Across Des Moines more than 700 volunteers helped by doing some minor maintenance or big repairs to 40 homes.

One volunteer says she doesn’t mind giving up her weekend to help others in need.

“Volunteering is a good thing to do to give back to the community and help someone who less fortunate, disabled, low income, started this 5 or 6 years ago and it’s a great thing to do,” says volunteer Kellaney Coffman.

Since 2005, Rebuilding Together has helped more than 1,000 homeowners.
