After a muggy Saturday, campers woke up to a downpour Sunday morning.

The campgrounds at Walnut Woods State Park in West Des Moines were full for “Camping Kickoff Weekend.”

It’s a time when Iowans make sure all their gear is working and enjoy the state parks ahead of the crowds.

A few folks packed up before the rain.

But seasoned campers say they’ve been taking advantage of the warm weather for months.

Camper Tom Johnson says, “We generally start it as soon as it gets warm.  This year we got an early start, probably in March we came out on our first trip.”

Campers say they reserve their spots months in advance.
