A busy bridge linking Des Moines to West Des Moines won’t be shut down this summer for construction.
The city of Des Moines had planned to close the 98-year-old Grand Avenue bridge at 63rd St. and replace it this summer, but problems with utility lines will delay the project a year.
The closure was set for May 8th, then pushed back another week. Friday the city announced it will put off the project until 2013 because Century Link hasn’t been able to remove its telephone cables from the bridge.
There will be lane closures over the next year to give Century Link the opportunity to relocate the telephone lines but the closure & demolition of the bridge won’t happen until next year.
The city says next year’s closure will be four weeks less than the seven months it had planned for the project this year.
