The Champions Tour golfers teed off Friday morning in the Principal Charity Classic at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines.
Among the fan favorites, are a pair of former Masters champions. Larry Mize won on the chip heard round the world in 1987. Fuzzy Zoeller won at his first masters in 1979. Both Zoeller and Mize look forward to our humble tournament here in Iowa.
“It’s been tremendous over the years, a lot of great friends and it’s always a pleasure to come back here and see my old friends,” said Zoeller.
A special group of fans will be honored during the big event this weekend.
Military members and their families will get in free to the event through Sunday. All they have to do is show a military ID.
They'll also enjoy the Patriot's Outpost. It's a special hospitality tent with air conditioning and refreshments. The outpost is located on the 18th hole.
“Employers and businesses they sponsored a hospitality area so that military friends and family can come in get refreshments and get in the air conditioning and really get the VIP treatment while they're here at the charity classic,” said Mary O’Keefe, chairperson of the Principal Charity Classic.
Military Appreciation Day is Sunday. There will be a special ceremony to honor our military on the 18th green during the trophy presentation.
