Iowa’s May unemployment rate held steady at 5.1 percent from April, but the number of unemployed Iowans went up slightly.

Iowa Workforce Development released its May numbers Friday. It shows 85,200 Iowans were reported as unemployed, which is 200 more than in April.

“The Iowa economy remains on track for modest growth in the coming months, “said Teresa Wahlert, IWD director. “Continued improvement, particularly in housing, will strengthen job growth in a broad range of industries.”

May’s rate breaks a four-month streak for a decline in Iowa’s unemployment rate.

The national unemployment rate rose from 8.1 percent in April to 8.2 percent in May.
