MORNING BUZZ: Starting the week
Good Morning!
Brooke is taking a well deserved day off. We’ll have her back tomorrow. Now that Brad is gone it really helps to have someone else there. Trying to do all of the normal duties and traffic without someone else to read stories makes it harder to find a 30 second break to check traffic. Luckily our streak of no morning traffic continues.
Healthcare
So the Supreme Court is expected to read as early as this morning on the Healthcare law. A friend said he hope they throw the entire thing out so a more bipartisan version can be rewritten. A new Reuters poll shows a majority of people don’t like the individual mandate but DID support a lot of the provisions of the law. I’m not sure you can do both. I hope the ruling doesn’t throw the healthcare industry into chaos. Something has to be done about the cost of healthcare.
Booze
Good to hear some people taking boating and drinking a little more seriously after a string of fatalities around Iowa already this year. Too bad it took that kind of wake-up call.
The City of Des Moines is thinking about limiting the places you can buy that booze whether you’ll be on a boat or dry land. I don’t disagree with the premise of the limitation on liquor sales but the marketplace has dictated we sell a lot of product at non-traditional settings. I can buy a sled at a hardware store along with a bag of twizzlers and replacement parts for the toilet. Quik Trips are no better. I can buy cat litter with my 52 ounce Rooster Booster and an ice cream sundae. Booze may fall into another category that crosses over. The neighborhood concerns are legitimate but it sets a bad prescident…if the city can limit sales of a product because it doesn’t like the side effect where does it stop.
Olympics
I’m a fan of the pre-olympic drama. These athletes have worked their entire lives for this one shot. Most of them aren’t doing it for a million dollar endorsement deal either. That’s compelling.
I hope you had a great weekend. Thanks to all of the people who came out to the Arts Festival this weekend. We always enjoy meeting you!
