ZOO NEWS: Four New Species Added
The Blank Park Zoo has some new additions to brag about.
Four new species are on display at the zoo. African cattle called watusi, squirrel monkeys, a King Vulture and a pair of Palm cockatoos now call the Des Moines zoo their home.
Two watusi cattle are currently on display and another will join them in a few weeks. They have horns that can reach up to eight feet long and 30 inches in circumference.
Three squirrel monkeys are sharing their habitat with a King Vulture, but don’t worry the monkeys are safe. Kink Vulture’s eat only carrion, the carcass of already dead animals.
The Palm cockatoo pair is native to Australia and only lays one egg every two years. They have an extraordinarily long life-span, with some in captivity living up to 90 years.
