SECOND SENTENCE: Two Prisoners Get Re-Sentenced

Two Iowans serving life in prison for murder will be re-sentenced, due to a recent ruling by the US Supreme Court.

Thomas Bennett and Christina Lockheart were both 17 at the time of their crimes.  Bennett killed a Des Moines man for his Social Security check in 1998.  Lockheart murdered a man while burglarizing his home in 1985.

The Iowa Court of Appeals vacated their sentences today, citing a Supreme Court ruling that sentencing a minor to life without parole constitutes cruel and unusual punishment, and is a violation of the US Constitution.

New sentencing dates for Bennett and Lockheart have not been set.
