You may have noticed something flying overhead during your morning commute Tuesday.

More than a dozen balloons took off Tuesday morning from Des Moines Water Works.

The goal was to get people excited about the National Balloon Classic starting this Friday in Indianola. Balloon launches will happen every morning and evening, weather permitting, during the classic.

Joel Worthington with Diamondjake Ballooning out of Newton says heat can affect a flight. He says you only feel a little extra heat in the basket.

But, high temperatures affect workers on the ground preparing for take-off and landing.

“We also lose lift because we get our lift from the difference in temperature between outside and inside. So, the hotter it is outside, the less lift we have available to us,” says Worthington.

The National Balloon Classic starts Friday and runs through Saturday, August 4th.
