ACLU REQUEST: New License Plate Readers
The Iowa American Civil Liberties Union wants to know more about license plate readers.
The ACLU sent out open records requests to 16 Iowa agencies, county sheriffs, and police departments, asking for more information.
The ACLU says the scanner can sweep 360 degrees, capturing images of every license plate it encounters. The data is then fed into a database for use and analysis.
They want to know how authorities are storing, accessing, and sharing the data.
Des Moines police are adding the technology in the Fall and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is already using the technology.
