SUSPICIOUS FIRE: East High Stadium Fire
A fire late Tuesday night destroyed a majority of East High School’s football equipment.
The equipment was housed in the coaches offices and the varsity locker rooms attached to Williams Stadium. Athletic Director Rick Powell says the fire also gutted out equipment rooms and public bathrooms.
Des Moines Police say the fire is suspicious and are seeking the occupants of a silver Chevy Impala and a maroon four door sedan, possibly a Pontiac for questioning. The vehicles were seen leaving the south parking lot just before firefighters arrived. The driver of one of the vehicles was described at a Hispanic male 18-25 years old.
If you have any information on the fire contact Polk County Crime Stoppers at 223-1400.
East begins practice Monday and now the team has no uniforms, pads, or other equipment. The fire was believed to have started because of an electrical issue.
No one was hurt in the fire, but it could affect the sound system of the stadium.
Damage estimates are $150,000 and the school district’s insurance will cover it. No donations are needed.
