CAMERA CONTROVERSY: Clive Demands Fine

Posted on: 11:09 pm, August 3, 2012, by

One day after we exposed city employees getting a free pass when they violate Des Moines’ automated traffic cameras, we learn that Des Moines Police tried to let a Clive city employee off the hook, as well.

Clive City Manager, Dennis Henderson, says one of his Parks and Rec. workers was captured running a red light in Des Moines.  But instead of a citation and a fine, Henderson says the City received a letter.

Clive also has traffic cameras.

Henderson says he called Des Moines Police and demanded that they issue a citation.  He says he saw to it that the employee did pay the fine.

He says it would be unwise for leaders of any city to have a policy that shows favoritism, like Des Moines’ does.

He says, “Nothing but a way to get ourselves into difficulties and to problems.  It would lead to issue after issue if we were treating one classification differently than another.”

Des Moines City Council Woman Christine Hensley is looking into Des Moines’ traffic camera policy.

She agrees that everyone should be treated the same, with “no exceptions.”
