Neighborhoods across Des Moines will join millions of people across the United States on the National Night Out. The event supports crime and drug prevention and is put on by law enforcement agencies with the help of local neighborhoods.  Events all over Des Moines will take place on Tuesday, August 7, marking the 23rd year the city has participated in this nationwide event.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anti crime programs; encourage interaction and cooperation between citizens, police, neighborhood groups, drug treatment, education and prevention programs. This collaboration is important to help deal with problems related to drugs, gangs, and other quality of life issues for neighborhoods.

Residents are asked to turn on their porch lights as well as get outside and enjoy their neighborhood. Many groups in Des Moines are hosting activities for their neighbors and members.  A variety of special events including cookouts games, block parties, and ice cream socials are scheduled. You can view a list of all the events here, National Night Out DSM Events.
