A police chase sped through two central Iowa counties for about 20 miles Friday morning..

It all started around 11:30 a.m. in Polk City. Police Chief Mark Bowersox says one of his officers was patrolling and noticed plates that didn’t match the car.

The officer tried to pull over 29-year-old Justin Gerlach of Maxwell but he didn’t stop.

Officers from Polk and Story counties and State Troopers joined in the chase.

It ended when Gerlach lost control while making a turn at the intersection of Highway 210 and 640th Avenue and slid into the ditch.

“We were fortunate in this instance the individual decided to go north out of Polk City instead of south and went into a more rural area, and I think that kept us from getting into a log of traffic. That made it turn out as well as it did, “said Bowersox.

Crews took Gerlach to a Des Moines hospital as a precaution.

After being released he’ll be booked into jail on charges of eluding, driving with fraudulent plates and driving on a suspended license.
