Maybe you’re a gym rat … maybe you’ve never set foot inside a fitness facility.  Regardless, there are some things you need to know when picking a place to work out.

Personal trainer Travis Steffen says the number one thing you should look for – is cleanliness.  “Making sure sweat is cleaned off machines, the floors are mopped, the locker rooms are in good order…those sorts of things.”

Number two … how is the space?  “It may not seem like a big deal,” Travis says, “but if you’re in a smaller gym, it’s going to be difficult to find space to move around, you’re running into people and you won’t be able to do your workout effectively.”

Asking about the facility’s support staff is number three.  “Not everyone knows what they’re doing at the gym so having a good support staff to show you around, to show you how to use equipment, and to teach you what you should be doing is really, really important.”

Along those lines, number four is credibility.  “You want to get recommendations from members, ask around in the community… is a gym I can trust?  A lot of gym chains will actually hire the least-qualified individuals so they can pay them less.  It’s a business just like any other business.”

They say variety is the spice of life and that’s number five of Travis’ list.  “Look for a place that has cardio equipment, weights, machines, and fitness classes that come with a membership that you don’t have to pay any extra for.”

Speaking of getting what you pay for … number six , is price.  Travis says many gyms will negotiate on everything from the joining fee to monthly dues.  Then it’s up to you to get your money’s worth, by showing up!
