Wednesday is “Older Iowans” Day at the fair, but not all those who are getting up there in age are able to travel to the fair, let alone walk around it.  One Beaverdale retirement community is bringing the fair to its residents.

In the comfort of their air condition older Iowans at the Calvin Community will each get a chance to sculpt their own butter cow, eat fair style foods, and compete in contests just like those at the fair.

Some staff and those residents who are able will head to the real Fair to compete in the senior cookie decorating contest.

“We’ve supplied cookies to the Fair on Older Iowans Day for years,” said Scallon. “This year we’re bringing 500 cookies. That’s a lot of decorating!”

The Older Iowans cookie decorating contest will be judged at noon at the Elwell Family Food Center. Calvin will be giving away hand-held fans there, too.

Other Older Iowan events at the fair include an Idol Contest,  Senior Spelldown, and a performance by the  Iowa Energy Spark Plugs Senior Women’s Dance Team and the Secondhand Toes Dance Troupe.
