It wasn’t fried food, but baked food at a State Fair contest Thursday.

The Land-O-Lakes best butter cookie competition got underway at noon in the Elwell Family Food Center.

Judges say there were several good entries including a pretty butterfly cookie.  But it landed in third place because judges said it was a bit thick.

The top prize went to Phillis Olson of Newton for her citrus butter cookie.  She said, “I got the recipe out of the Country Woman cookbook, it’s the first time I've never made it, so I was fortunate it turned out so well.”

Olson says she likes cookies because they are portable and not messy like cake and pie.

She is taking home a year’s supply of butter for winning first place.
