BALCONY FALL: Police Investigate Fifth Floor Fall
Ames Police want to know how a person fell from an apartment balcony and landed some 50 feet below. Iowa State students want to know if he survived. It happened around 1:30 Sunday morning at the Legacy Apartments at 119 Stanton Avenue.
Authorities are not releasing many details about what happened, but there were plenty of witnesses.
“Everyone was going out just trying to have a good time and then all of a sudden this happens,” said ISU sophomore Sarah Hoffman.
She and her friends were out for the first weekend of the fall semester.
“All of sudden we heard like a bunch of screams and girls were walking that way crying,” ISU Junior said Mitch Hirn.
“Me and my friend were just in shock and then we looked between the wood boards or whatever and we saw someone laying there,” said Hoffman.
Witnesses say the unknown male landed in a construction area. He barely missed the debris and other materials on the ground. Police say he was air-lifted to a hospital where his condition is not known.
“He fell hard,” said Hoffman.
Ross Tucker lives in the apartment complex and was out on his balcony at the same time.
“I felt the rush of air go past and then the impact which I’ve never felt or heard anything like that. It’s one of the most traumatic things,” said Tucker.
At least one person says it looked like the person may have jumped. Ames police are not commenting. They`re still interviewing witnesses and waiting to contact the victim`s family. Whatever happened, it left students and their parents shaken.
“Both of them were very concerned about my mental well-being,” said Tucker.
“When my mom finds out, she will probably call me and she’ll be freaking out. I’ll tell her I’m fine,” said Hoffman.
That’s what they’re hoping for the person who fell from a balcony the first weekend of classes.
“I’m hoping he’s OK for sure,” said Hirn.
Police are asking witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at (515) 239-5312. They say more details about the case will be released tomorrow.
