Almost everyone living in Central Iowa in 2006 remembers the name CIETC. The Central Iowa Employment and Training Consortium was a place designed to train Iowans for jobs.
But it turned out to be a place where executives and board members wasted millions in taxpayer money on extravagant salaries, bonuses, and lavish vacations.
After the news broke in 2006, federal prosecutors pounced, five executives were sentenced, and four of them received prison terms.
The most familiar name… former CIETC Board Chairman and Des Moines City Councilman Archie Brooks received one year and one day in federal prison for signing off on the spending.
He was ordered to pay $400,000 in restitution and his name was stripped from the Des Moines Community Center he helped establish.
Brooks is out of prison, and he sat down with Channel 13’s Dan Winters for three minutes in the chair.
