Des Moines volunteers finished strong after four days of meal packing. Meals From The Heartland is Iowa’s largest food packing event and this year, organizers set the bar even higher.

Workers started Wednesday with the goal of packing five million meals.

Semi-truckloads of food left Hy-vee Hall about every three hours, thanks to the hard work of the 15,000 volunteers.

The final count showed volunteers packed more than 5.1 million meals.
