Gov. Terry Branstad practiced what he preaches Thursday.

After announcing a new effort to make Iowa number one in volunteerism earlier this week, the governor got to work volunteering at Central Iowa Shelter and Services.

Branstad helped pack Homeless Help Kits with personal supplies. The shelter will use the kits for people who stay at the new homeless shelter in the process of being built.

After packing the kits, Branstad received a tour.

“I'm impressed it's going to be a nice uplifting facility but also it's great to see the number of volunteer participating and helping,” said Branstad.

The shelter's grand opening is set for September 21st.
