The presidential race was the big topic of conversation at Iowa senator Tom Harkin’s annual steak fry fundraiser.

“This is the same Barack Obama we saw four years ago and I can tell you that this is the same Barack Obama you elected four years ago and he is fired up and ready to go,” Sen. Harkin told the crowd.

For 35 years, the Harkin Steak Fry has brought some of the biggest names in the Democratic Party to central Iowa. Past guests include President Bill Clinton and then senator Barack Obama.

This year, the headliner was Maryland governor Martin O’Malley. He encouraged voters to support local candidates as well as President Obama.

O’Malley is rumored to be a presidential candidate in 2016 but skirted the issued when asked about his future.

“The greatest chance we have is to re-elect Barack Obama as president of the United States, elect more Democratic governors, and give our kids a better future by the choice we make in 51 days. That’s the chance I’m focused on,” said O’Malley.

Early voting begins in Iowa in just 11 days. The November election is still about seven weeks away.
