CAM CASH: Traffic Cameras Bring In Money
August was the most profitable month yet this year for Des Moines’ automated traffic cameras.
The number of citations issued by the five red light cameras and I-235 and mobile speed cams was down, but the number of people paying went up.
Only 4,832 citations were issued in August but more than 6,500 outstanding citations were paid. That brought in $315,000 for the city in August.
To date this year, the cameras 30,000 citations that have been paid have brought in $1.2 million for the city. Money generated from the citations goes into the city of Des Moines’ general fund.
