MidAmerican Energy is warning customers to be weary of a phone scam. The scam is similar to one they reported in May, but this time the scammers seem to be targeting Hispanic customers specifically.
The scam artist poses as a MidAmerican Energy customer service associate and states that the customer’s account is past due and payment is needed immediately to avoid disconnection. Then they ask for the customer’s credit card information or that the customer purchase a prepaid debit card and call back with the information on the card.
MidAmerican advises that credit card numbers and personal information should not be provided in response to any unsolicited phone call.
Any customer who receives a suspicious call should hang up and call MidAmerican Energy’s customer service line at 888-427-5632. Company representatives will then confirm whether the call was from their call center or a scam artist.
