AMES FIRE: Student Center Evacuated
Flames were seen at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Student Center near Iowa State University around 9:40 on Tuesday night. All students were evacuated and the Ames Fire Department was able to knock the flames down before they spread too far.
“The flames were pretty high luckily it was kind of an isolated area,” said Father Jim Dubert of the St. Thomas staff. “We have a lot of students in the building at this time…they were in another part so they were all very safe, we’re very thankful to God for that.”
Ames Fire Chief Shawn Bayouth said Firefighters saw flames inside a second floor window when they arrived. He credited their quick work for preventing the fire from spreading.
Some furniture was burned in the incident, but no one was injured.
Father Dubert told News Channel 13 that the fire started after a visitor on the second floor left a cigarette in a pouch.by the building was taped off and being investigated. However, Cheif Bayouth says the fire remains under investigation because the fire was in a church, the State Fire Marsahall and the Bureau of Alohol Tobbacco and Firearms were called.
