Monday is Child Health Day in Iowa. This is the second year the Governor’s office has proclaimed a child health day in the state.

The Iowa chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics helped push for the day to be a voice for the state’s most valuable resource — kids. Doctors say the goal is to raise awareness about the issues facing children in the state, with one of those being kids’ growing waistlines.

“We know obesity is a huge issue for children, almost a third of the population is overweight or obese. And, so it’s really important children have supportive families that teach them about healthy habits, as well as supportive communities,” says Dr. Jennifer Groos.

Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds will sign the proclamation Monday afternoon at Blank Children’s Hospital.
