Des Moines Police say thieves helped themselves to copper wiring from a concrete plant, but ended up causing more damage to the property than the stolen copper was even worth.
The theft was discovered Tuesday at the American Concrete Plant on Dixon street.
Police say the thieves stripped copper wiring from nearly 2-dozen breaker and junction boxes, likely over a two week period last month.
As scrap, the copper wiring is worth about $3.50 per pound.
In the end the thief probably ended up with about $100 in copper, not before causing about $100,000 in damage to the non-operational concrete plant. In order to get to the wire, they had to destroy the electrical boxes.
Police are hoping they will get lucky catching the criminal because scrapyards are required to get identification from anyone turning in metal.
