GET WALKING: International Walk To School Day

Students across the state will walk to school Wednesday to mark International Walk to School Day. Over 75 school walk events are registered throughout Iowa.

The international campaign promotes safety, fun, and healthy habits for kids by walking or biking to school.

By participating kids learn about the importance of increasing physical activity, pedestrian safety, concern for the environment, reducing traffic congestion; and building connections between families, schools and communities.

Parents are encouraged to walk to school with their students in order to identify unsafe intersections, and streets in need of sidewalks. The Iowa Department of Public Health has developed a walkability checklist that helps assess the walking environment and identify things that may stop others from walking. Then, they can become advocates for a more walkable community.

This is happening in conjunction with Iowa’s Second Annual Healthiest State Initiative Walk, which aims to get everyone walking, even if it’s only a block.  Last year more than 291,000 Iowans participated in the kick-off Start Somewhere Walk.
