HIDDEN POT: Rural Growing Operations Busted

Posted on: 1:12 pm, October 3, 2012, by and , updated on: 05:32pm, October 3, 2012

The Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement is asking for help to shut down large outdoor marijuana grow operations.

Two large growing operations were found in Iowa recently, one in Taylor County and another in Decatur County. Officials also say a large operation in northwest Missouri was shut down.

The DNE says these operations are often in rural areas and landowners aren’t aware that marijuana growers are squatting. The three grow operations recently located were all in dense timber.

Rural land owners, farm workers, and hunters are advised to keep an eye out for anything suspicious in remote areas. If you notice anything that could be related to a marijuana grow operation you’re asked to contact local law enforcement only after you’ve left the area safely.

“We just wanted to let the public know that these marijuana grows are occuring, they’re occuring in Iowa and if someone were to come apon on of these marijuana grows, or what appears to be the reminence of a grow, we’d ask them to back out of that area.  Then get to a safe place and contact local law enforcement and let them know what they’ve seen,” says Narcotics Enforcement Assistant Director Kevin Winker.

The DNE says 3,850 marijuana plants were destroyed at the Taylor County location and 571 plants were destroyed at the Decatur County location.
