A Des Moines family got an unexpected bonus with their pizza delivery Thursday night: A visit from the fire department.

A Des Moines fire crew followed a Papa John’s pizza employee to a house.  The reason had little to do with what the homeowners ordered.  Firefighters were there to make sure the home’s smoke detectors were in good working order.

In return, the family gets either a coupon for a free pizza, batteries, or a replacement detector.

The fire department has partnered with papa johns’ to ‘deliver fire protection” to homes.  Safety advocates say the program has been effective in educating entire neighborhoods.

The program has been going for six years now.  In that time, firefighters have visited more than 360 homes.
