The Des Moines School Board voted to terminate Lincoln High School’s Head Football Coach Tom Mihalovich Wednesday night.
Assistant Coach Kevin Johnston was fired earlier.
Mihalovich and two of his assistant coaches were suspended last month pending an investigation into hazing allegations.
Last week details of why they were suspended were released to the media.
A former player says he was harassed and forced to run extra laps at practice after posting a message online that was critical of the Lincoln Football team.
Wednesday night, Mihalovich appealed his suspension at a special meeting of the Des Moines School Board.
Board members Dick Murphy, Connie Boesen, Cindy Elsbernd, and Joe Jongewaard voted for termination, Teree Caldwell-Johnson and Pat Sweeney voted against, Bill Howard abstained.
Interim Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools Tom Ahart recommended that Mihalovich and Johnston be dismissed.
Ahart released a statement following the boards decision that read: “Let me be very clear: the mistreatment of a student, whether in a classroom or on a football field, is inappropriate in any situation. Des Moines Public School does not and will not tolerate any employee or volunteer who does not uphold the best interests of our students, both in school and in extracurricular activities. If there is a lesson to be learned from this matter, I hope it is a reminder of that important fact.”
Following the meeting Mihalovich was swarmed by his former players, many of them in tears after hearing their beloved coach was fired.
