A group of Story County veterans is getting the chance to travel to Washington, D.C. next week.

The Story County Freedom Flight is leaving from the Des Moines International Airport next Tuesday and will take veterans to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials dedicated in their honor.

One-hundred and fifty veterans from World War II and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts are taking the trip. Twelve caretakers are traveling with them.

Organizer Renee Twedt says they originally had a goal of raising $95,000 but in total received $110,000 in donations – and they’re using all of the money. She says no one donor came through with a big check, but the flight was made possible by smaller donations throughout the county. The largest donation was $2,500 from Hy-Vee.

The flight leaves at 6:45 Tuesday morning and returns at 10:50 p.m. The Patriot Guard will be there to send off the veterans and welcome them back.
