TASK FORCE: Teacher Compensation Suggestions

A state task force created to make recommendations on teacher leadership and compensation in Iowa has released its plan.

Thursday morning the task force released its final report, giving new suggestions on improving the state’s school system. 

Iowa Department of Education director Jason Glass says the task force recommended the state raise starting salaries, offer different career options for teachers, and incentivize teachers to teach in high-need schools.

Glass says it can be hard to keep high-quality school teachers in low-income school  

“We know we have a shortage in math, science, and special education in our highest poverty schools. This is because they have other options. We have shortages in those areas and the way to address a shortage is through compensation increase,” says Glass.

These recommendations could be a part of next year’s Education Reform bill.
