We’re getting a better picture of how much damage the summer drought did to Iowa crops.

In its updated yield forecast, the USDA predicts Iowa soybean farmers will average 43 bushels per acre. Last year they averaged more than 50 bushels per acre.

The corn yield is expected to be around 140 bushels per acre. Last year Iowa farmers averaged 172 bushels per acre.

Nationally, 122 bushels per acre is the expected average. That’s 25.2 bushels below the national average in 2011. The total corn production forecast is for 10.7 billion bushels, which is the lowest production in the United States since 2006.
