Hundreds of people kicked off World Food Prize week with a Hunger Hike Sunday.

Walkers started and ended at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates in downtown Des Moines.

Organizers say the hike is a symbol of those who must work hard to obtain food on a daily basis. Participants donated money to help end hunger in Iowa and worldwide.

“Not everyone has access to the food they need, either nutritious food or even sustaining food, and I think it’s our obligation as human beings to share this with other people in the world,” says Lucille Wilson, Hunger Hike organizer.

On Thursday, Dr. Daniel Hillel will be awarded the 2012 Norman Borlaug World Food Prize.

The prize honors outstanding individuals who have made vital contributions in improving quality or quantity of food throughout the world.

Dr. Hillel is known for his work in the Middle East. He implemented a new micro-irrigation process to crops in dry regions.
