IMMIGRANT DRIVING: ACLU Asks Iowa To Clarify Policy

The American Civil Liberties Union is pushing for Iowa to issue driver’s licenses to non-citizens who have been granted “deferred status” by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The ACLU recently sent a letter to the Iowa DOT asking the agency to clarify its policy.

The ACLU says young non-citizens allowed to stay in the United States as part of President Obama’s executive order, often called DREAMers after the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors legislative proposal, should have the right to drive.

State leaders in Nebraska say they intend to fight efforts to allow those with deferred status to drive.  Iowa leaders are yet to make a decision.
