KINNICK ASHES: Group Converges On Kinnick
This Saturday will be a very special day for a group of men from West Des Moines.
They’ll be coming together in Iowa City from all over the country, and honoring the last wishes of a close friend.
From the year they graduated from Valley High School in the 70s until they were grey and in their fifties, the group of old friends would reunite in Iowa City, with Tom in the center.
So when the call came, in 2008, it was a shock to everyone. Tom Sharpe had cancer.
He asked for more of the same. More reunions, more tailgating, more Kinnick and no regrets.
The end came last December. But in true fashion, Sharpe wanted one more weekend with his friends. On Saturday, he`ll get it.
Each of his friends is carrying some of Tom`s ashes. Tim Raftis had to carry his onto the plane from Florida.
Raftis says, “Well, of course I was concerned… here it is, six or eight ounces of Tom and I was a little concerned going through airport security in Orlando that I was going to get called out!”
He made it through. Others will join in from New York, Milwaukee and elsewhere. As always, Tom will be at the center.
Tom Sharpe was the one who didn’t go to Iowa. But he will be the one who gets to stay.
