The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has released more information about an officer involved shooting in southeast Iowa Tuesday.

The DCI says a Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputy is on paid administrative leave following an incident that left one man dead. Authorities were called to Highway 2, just east of Cantril, around 11:00 a.m. Tuesday on reports a man in a military uniform was armed with a rifle and making obscene gestures at passing drivers.

When deputies arrived they ordered the man, 59-year-old Robert Dooley of Brighton, to put down his weapon several times. He disobeyed the deputies, turned toward them and raised the gun. That’s when Deputy Jon Tharp fired one shot at Dooley, killing him.

An autopsy confirms Dooley died of a single gunshot wound.

The DCI is continuing to investigate the shooting.
