We all remember one house that went all out for Halloween.
“There were some people in my hometown of Winterset that had one for years,” says Lew Jordan of Urbandale, “and then when that went away I’ve never been so disappointed in my life, I don’t think.”
So Jordan’s has become that house. He and his buddies do it together.
“We use a lot of ideas off of Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’” says longtime friend, Jason Kemp of Waukee, “but all the stuff we’ve built ourselves.”
From the figures, to the maze, to the pirate ship…it’s a handmade haunted hullabaloo…for all ages.
“Nobody’s going to jump out at you, here,” Kemp says, “you know we want people to walk through and take their time and really appreciate the work that we’ve put into it.”
Lew and Jason are military veterans, and last year they had an idea.
“A lot of people came up to me and said ‘Hey, you should charge money for this,’” Jordan says, “and so we said ‘Hey, why don’t we take donations and give it to a wounded veterans charity?’”
Last year, they raised $645, this year, it got even bigger and the goal is $2000. And next year?
“Lew’s wife has already said ‘Hey, you might want to think about moving it somewhere else besides my house!’” Kemp laughs.
Right…maybe next year it’ll be someone else’s turn to be ‘The House’.
