CAMPAIGN DRAMA: Sheriff Candidate Claims Sabotage
A Warren County deputy claims that someone is trying to sabotage his campaign for sheriff.
Preston Gebhart works in the Indianola jail. He beat four other Republicans in the primary to face Chief Deputy Brian Vos.The election will decide who replaces retiring Sheriff Jim Lee.
Recently, Craigslist emails surfaced that appear to show Gebhart used his computer at the jail to try to solicit sex from three different women. It’s a violation of county policy and a fireable offense.
Gebhart denies the allegations. He says that a co-worker could have easily used his computer to send the emails when he stepped away to attend to inmates at different times.
Gebhart says the Sheriff’s race is taking a toll on his wife and his children.
“She’s upset that someone would go this far to try and wreck our family name. You know, my daughter’s in junior high and she’s going through a heck of a time with this and in the past as well by other damaging statements that have been made by other people throughout the community.”
Neither Sheriff Lee, nor Gebhart’s opponent, Brian Vos, have commented on the matter.
Gebhart is still employed. The county IT Director says there is no way to prove either way if Gebhart sent the emails or not.
